The Indispensable Lawyer™

Helping lawyers stay indispensable in an AI-enabled legal profession.

AI is changing how lawyers learn the job. The research, drafting, analysis, and problem-solving that once helped lawyers build expertise and judgment can now be done faster, and often by a tool. That leaves a question for every lawyer and every firm: as AI changes how the work gets done, how do lawyers continue to develop the knowledge, skills, and judgment they need to do the job well?

About Khara

Khara Kelsch spent more than 20 years in BigLaw as both a practicing attorney and a legal talent professional. She has seen the profession from both chairs. She has done the work, and she has developed the people who do it.

A Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and founder of Apex Coaching, Khara works with lawyers and legal organizations on career growth, talent development, and leadership as legal work changes.

She is a regular contributor to Bloomberg Law’s Legal Exchange Insights and has been featured in Thomson Reuters and other legal industry publications. She speaks regularly at industry conferences and roundtables on how AI is reshaping legal careers and talent development.

Why This Matters Now

For early-career lawyers, AI can change how they develop the foundational skills of the profession. For experienced lawyers, it can change how they deepen expertise, exercise judgment, lead and manage others, and continue to add value as the work evolves.

48% of legal professionals are concerned that AI could negatively affect the development of independent judgment.

78% believe early-career lawyers depend on experienced mentorship to build skills that AI may otherwise displace.

- Thomson Reuters Future of Professionals Report, 2026

The Indispensable Lawyer™ provides professional development for lawyers and legal organizations working through that question. Through coaching, training, and workshops, it focuses on how lawyers continue building expertise and judgment, how they integrate AI, and how their value evolves as their work changes. The work draws on a proprietary assessment framework built specifically for the legal profession.

AI-Ready Lawyer™

For practicing attorneys

Coaching and workshops for attorneys who use AI in their daily work and want to keep building the judgment and skills their careers depend on. The focus is on what they still need to learn, practice, and own when AI does more of the work. The judgment attorneys build now becomes the expertise their teams and firms rely on later.

Discovery Assessment

A short assessment of where attorneys stand today. It looks at how they use AI, where their judgment is going, and how they describe their own value.

Mindset Insights

A closer look at the beliefs, habits, questions and concerns shaping how attorneys respond to the change. Working through what’s in the way often opens the door to using AI more effectively.

Owning Your Judgment

Working out together what stays with the attorney, what gets handed off, and how they keep building judgment through practice when AI does part of the work.

Professional Development & Value

Together, we help attorneys identify the judgment, skills, and experience they need to keep building, and explain their value inside and outside the firm. Each attorney leaves with practical next steps they have co-designed with their coach.
